Mission Statement

To enable adults, whose low level of literacy impedes their progress in society to set and achieve their personal goals through improved literacy skills.

Tutoring in math and reading
is done on a one-to-one personal basis. In addition The Literacy Council provides:

English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) - Our ESOL program is designed to teach the English language, whether spoken or written.

Citizenship Preparation - After working in our ESOL program, many of our clients choose to apply for U.S. Citizenship.

The Hard Numbers

  • More than 36 million adults in the U.S. cannot read, write, or do basic math above a third grade level.
  • 50% of the chronically unemployed are not functionally literate.
  • 43% of adults with the lowest literacy levels live in poverty.
  • Children of parents with low literacy skills have a 72% chance of being at the lowest reading levels.
  • 75% of the U.S. prison inmates do not have a high school diploma.
  • It is estimated that limited literacy costs the U.S. businesses and taxpayers $20 billion in lost business earnings, wages and taxes.

Who Makes up the Literacy Council?

To be honest, it is everyone in the region, and with your support we are improving our community! Anyone can become a member by contributing or volunteering their support. Volunteers are needed to fill openings on the board of directors as well as the continual need for tutors. Contact the office today and help make the Lima region a better place to live, work, and enjoy life together.
